Rostima for Ports...the first end-to-end Workforce Management solution for the Maritime Industry

Rostima has been working with a number of major terminal operators with a view to providing an Enterprise Workforce Management solution that is designed specifically for the unique requirements of the global Maritime industry. It is the only fully integrated container port Workforce Management solution which is flexible enough to meet various operational processes, rules and restrictions arising from the unique requirements of different ports whilst providing optimised scheduling of employees via micro-planning and micro management. The software is a flexible level application which captures and automates the business processes within an organisation.

Today, Rostima is respected in the industry for being amongst the best labour optimisation solution providers. Rostima Workforce Management products have been successfully implemented in the Maritime industries throughout Asia and Australia, the UK, Europe, the US and the Americas. Given the cultural sensitivities and legislative differences within these varying geographies, Rostima has developed fully customisable product solutions for Container Terminals, General Cargo Stevedoring, RORO and Passenger Terminals which recognise the uniqueness of different working environments.

Rostima's prime strategy is to be recognised as the industry standard for Enterprise Workforce Management solutions in the global Maritime industry, enabling customers to deliver leaner and more efficient terminal operations.

Solution Overview

The Rostima system covers the whole spectrum from Capacity Planning to Operational Scheduling, Duty Allocation and Real Time Attendance Management. Its unique algorithms take account of labour cost, utilisation, skilling, working time rules and preferences in determining the most effective schedules and work allocations for an operation.

The modular approach to the solution allows for flexibility so that key operational constraints such as management policies, collective agreements with unions, local labour legislations, contract hours and individual preferences can be configured into the system and taken into account during the planning process. By using the in-house developed algorithms, the system is able to create an optimised schedule for planners.

The solution comprises the following elements:

Solution Benefits

The solution has been implemented for quayside and landside operations for container terminals, general cargo stevedoring, RORO and passenger operations. It provides numerous benefits including:

  • Reduction of planning overheads
  • Reduction of labour cost by improvement in operational efficiency achieved by accurate modelling, planning and execution of operations
  • "What if" analysis to evaluate the impact of changes to operational rules and/or requirements
  • Automatic creation and allocation of tasks to resources based on operational needs, resource availability and optimal deployment criteria
  • Retention of knowledge within the organisation compared to critical data stored and unwritten within the minds of long-serving employees
  • Storage of employee capabilities and skill preferences to ensure these are maintained in a central repository for efficient skill staff development and management
  • Consistent, fair distribution of work
  • Audit of existing workload models
  • Formalisation and storage of all paper-based rosters/entries into a central database
  • Compliance with labour agreements and H&S regulations
  • Improved strategic and operational labour planning
  • Decision support for optimised business planning
  • Increased workforce efficiency and productivity
  • Attendance management, task tracking and real-time deployment

Typically, Rostima has been able to demonstrate labour hour savings of between 5% and 10% through the application of our technology. In addition, the more flexible the working arrangements and the ability to change rostered work patterns, the greater the saving - up to 20% in some cases.
